Foam & Water Fire Extinguishers
Water fire extinguishers are a common and cost-effective option for fighting Class A fires. These include fires whose fuel source includes:
- Wood
- Paper
- Trash
- Plastics
- Fabric
- Rubber
Importantly, water fire extinguishers should not be used on electrical fires (Class C) because of a higher risk of electrocution. Water extinguishers are also not effective on fires caused by flammable liquids (Class B) or cooking oils (Class K). Water will have the opposite effect and can actually cause the spread of flames on these fires. Water Mist fire extinguishers on the other hand can be used on Class A fires and where the potential for a Class C fire exists. These fire extinguishers use a specialized nozzle and de-ionized water to provide safety from electrical shock. The fine mist also aids in the cooling effect of the agent and helps to reduce the scattering of burning material. Water fire extinguishers come in the standard 2.5 GAL size from Amerex, Ansul and Strike First Corporation.
