Lithium-Ion Battery Safety Storage Cabinets

Lithium batteries are being used more and more in our daily work environments. They are generally trouble free so long as they do not become damaged in the course of their routine use of if they exhibit any defects affecting their performance. Should lithium batteries fail to operate as designed or if they become damaged due to improper storage, they have the potential to start a fire and/or explode.

Justrite Hazardous Material Safety Cabinets have the same quality safety features as the cabinets for flammables. All models come with double-wall construction, dual vents, grounding wire connections, leakproof sills, three-point self-latching doors and leveling feet.

These blue colour-coded, flame-resistant cabinets also come with adjustable shelves allowing you to re-arrange the configuration to suit your needs to safely store your materials. Protecting batteries against banging or other physical damage when storing is a key benefit when using flammable storage cabinets. Exclusive to Justrite, each cabinet comes with a "Hazardous - Keep Fire Away" label, as well as a pack of ten application-specific labels to choose from and apply to the cabinet in order to indicate its contents. Cabinets comply with NFPA 1, NFPA 400 Hazardous Material Code, and the International Fire Code. Cabinets are FM approved and come with a ten-year warranty. For information on restricted hazardous material categories, please see NFPA 55 Compressed Gases and Cryogenic Fluids Code, and NFPA 30 Flammable and Combustible Liquids Code. Please consult your local code authority for any other items in question.

Lithium batteries naturally deteriorate over time, and a fully charged lithium-ion battery will lose about 20% of its capacity after a year of storage. The way you store lithium batteries can make them degrade faster or help them have a longer lifespan. It’s critical to store lithium batteries in a cool place between 5 °C and 20 °C (41 °F and 68 °F). You also want to keep lithium-ion batteries at about 50% relative humidity. Consult the manufacturer’s SDS for specific details.

Lithium-ion batteries can be extinguished safely with a dry-chemical, all-purpose ABC fire extinguisher or BC fire extinguisher.

Keep batteries from touching each other while being stored. This helps you prevent heat buildup and accidental battery terminal contact between batteries. Reduce the chance of physical damage to your lithium batteries by eliminating the contact of batteries in storage.
