Flammable drums storage poses a potentially serious health and safety hazard to your workforce. Make sure your drums have a pressure vent allowing air to enter the drum while dispensing contents thus preventing a vacuum from forming. These vents also allow vapour pressure buildup to safely vent, preventing the drum from exploding. Use spill palletstrays , or caddies to contain spills and accidental overflows.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has revised NFPA 30, stating that flammable and combustible materials packaged in steel drums sealed with approved plastic fittings may be stacked four high on wooden pallets. This only applies if your facility has a foam and water fire suppression system. Consult the NFPA for full details.

OSHA does not prohibit the intermingling of flammable and combustible liquids in a storage cabinet, however, it depends on what you’re storing and in what quantities. For instance, flammable solids and combustible liquids cannot be stored together. If these types of dangerous goods are stored near each other, they must be segregated by no less than 5 meters. Consult the OSHA for full details.

For Group I liquids (flammable or combustible liquids with a flash point lower than 140° F), you can have storage outside of a cabinet consisting of 10 gallons in containers or 25 gallons in safety cans. For Group II liquids (combustible liquid with a flash point equal to or greater than 140° F and lower than 200° F), you can store 60 gallons outside a cabinet. Finally, for Group III liquids (combustible liquids with a flash point greater than or equal to 200° F), there is no limit to how much you can store outside of a flammable materials cabinet. Consult the NFPA for full details.
